OPU NEMBE CORPS MEMBERS EMBARK ON SELFLESS PROJECT TO ALLEVIATE WATER SCARCITY

Community Development service is the lifeline of the National Youth Service Corps and corps members are urged to contribute positively towards the growth of their host community.

Anyiam Kennedy Ekenedirichukwu who was recently appointed as the Corps Liaison Officer for Nembe LGA(February,2023)after series of community development service projects successfully completed as the leader of the Medical CDS team. Took it upon himself to ensure that the corps members are constantly reminded of their role to actualize this goal.

Opu-Nembe is a part of Nembe LGA known to be surrounded by water bodies however, the community residents which now include corps members face scarcity of water due to long distances they have to trek to gain access to water which is usually contaminated and most times unsafe for day to day activities. The system of water supply is through community pipes linked throughout the community however some areas are not fully connected to clean water and residents are forced to make due despite the health implications.

Anyiam Kennedy E. Who is also a healthcare professional had embarked on several campaigns through the collaborative efforts of the medical CDS NEMBE and the health facilities to sensitize the community residents about the dangers of drinking dirty water and hygiene.

After another day of water hustle, an emergency meeting was called by the Corps Liaison Officer(Anyiam Kennedy Ekenedirichukwu) who motivated the corps members to embark on a water project which would not just aid things for them but also allow community members who live close to the Corpers' lodge to fetch clean water.

Corps members voluntarily contributed resources and expertise and in two days the corps members were able to complete the water project, it was tested and through the expertise of some corps members who were engineers, structured such that it solves the problem of easy accessibility while still providing clean water to not just the corps members but other residents and staff who live close to the lodge some of which are the staff of Community Boys Secondary School quite close to the lodge among others.

The efforts were commended by the new Local Government Inspector(Mrs. Rebecca James) who praised the efforts of the corps members led by Anyiam kennedy and urged them to continue making impact with or without monetary benefits.
